Merle Haggard – My Love Affair With Trains/The Roots Of My Raising

Catalog No. BGOCD544
My Love Affair With Trains/The Roots Of My Raising by Merle Haggard
  • Originally released in 1976 on the Capitol record label, now available for the first time as a 2 on 1 CD
  • These were the final two LPs that Merle made for Capitol, with whom he'd been signed since 1968. Together with his backing band The Strangers, he became a huge country star, with eight singles reaching Number One during the second half of the 1960s. This success was achieved through hard work as much as by good luck - Merle and his band averaged 200 live shows per year while he was signed to Capitol
  • Merle Haggard's life story reads like fictional fantasy: he spent three years in San Quentin as a convicted burglar, was inspired to become a musician after seeing a show by Johnny Cash, and subsequently became a country music legend, rated as the fifth most successful country act of all time
  • He was granted a full pardon for his criminal activities in 1972 by Ronald Reagan, the then-Governor of California, and in 1973 he performed at the White House for President Nixon. Along with a recording output which is prolific by any standards - well over 50 albums in around 30 years, as well as dozens of compilations - he also appeared in 'The Waltons' TV series; he made a guest appearance in the 1980 Clint Eastwood film 'Bronco Billy - where he duetted with Eastwood on 'Bar Room Buddies - (which was yet another US country Number One); and he appeared in several other movies and TV series. In 1983 he won another CMA Award when he and Willie Nelson were voted 'Vocal Duo Of The Year' after recording a platinum album, 'Poncho & Lefty'
  • Merle Haggard has remained at the top of the tree for 30 years and is regarded as a living legend in the US, although he has rarely visited Britain - perhaps because there has always been considerable demand for him in his native country
  • Also available on BGO Records: BGOCD328 I'm A Lonesome Fugitive/Mama Tried
